Introduction
Élixir de Mer delves into the sense of smell from a corporeal perspective.
In a world dominated by visual stimuli, scent has a stealthy and elusive presence. Scent memories leave strong imprints within the layers of our bodies—whether it's the gentle aroma of violet petals or the pungent swell of a gas station forecourt. A scent can transport us through time to a specific place, situation, or atmosphere. It can also be a form of seduction and power, as perfumes were used in both Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt.
With every breath, molecules from our surroundings are absorbed into our mucous membranes. Perhaps it was the stimulating effect of scent that led the olfactory buds of a creature floating in the primordial sea to evolve into brain cells?
The physicality of smell sets our bodies vibrating, and Élixir de Mer explores this resonance through dance, sound, and space. It seeks out the multilayered harmonies of scent—sensations that can remain with us for weeks, months, even years.
Élixir de Mer is the fourth work of the series exploring senses and our sensory experiences by choreographer Johanna Nuutinen.
The core creative team is formed by experienced and distinctive artists. Choreographer Johanna Nuutinen directs the work and leads the team. Ville Kabrell’s sound design and music create an intense atmosphere and a rhythmic backbone for the performance. Lauri Lundahl’s spatial design builds the visual world of the piece, and dramaturg Riikka Laakso supports the team by developing and deepening its meanings and themes. On stage, dance artists Clémentine Herveux and Manon Andral bring together precise movement, deep physical presence, and subtle interpretive sensitivity.
A few carefully selected scents are used in the performance. Please arrive fragrance-free.
Before the performance on Saturday 27 September, a lecture related to the themes of scent will take place from 4–5pm. Location: Cable Factory (exact space to be confirmed).
Organized by Johanna Nuutinen +Collaborators.
