Introduction
Acclaimed for its blend of aerial acrobatics, contemporary dance and physical comedy, Naapuri (Neighbour) takes a peek into people’s coexistence in an apartment building.
Sivuun Ensemble brings Naapuri to Dance House Helsinki together with the internationally acclaimed contemporary circus company Kallo Collective. Captivating both audiences and critics alike, the performance is built around absurd situations arising from the different ways generations and individuals live side by side.
In this work by award-winning choreographer Ninni Perko, the audience dives into the core of humanity as the piece pushes boundaries between dance and physical theatre, black humour and poetic expression.
An entire world within a single stairwell.
Naapuri invites the audience to peer through the spyhole into a delightfully familiar neighbourhood and its lovable — and infuriating — residents. Through encounters between neighbours, the work opens up perspectives on broader societal questions of our time, including hierarchies, shifting forms of solidarity and belonging. The multidisciplinary piece has been developed in collaboration with urban researcher Pekka Tuominen, and its themes are based on research on neighbourhoods and suburban communities.
The music and sound design for this visually striking work are created by Finland Prize-winning musician Jarmo Saari.
Naapuri explores the possibilities of empathy and the limits of tolerance as rules begin to take shape — and those moments when the distortions of everyday life become the norm.
A performance for everyone who has ever had a neighbour.

In addition
Introductory talks by social anthropologist Pekka Tuominen on Thu 8 Oct and Fri 9 Oct at 17:45 (in the lobby of Dance House Helsinki).
In the talks, Tuominen discusses the collaboration with the performance’s artistic team and how qualitative research encounters movement-based performance, shaping meanings in very different ways. The aim is to highlight research themes related to rapidly changing suburban communities and to build connections between science and art.

The Creative Team
Sivuun Ensemble is a Helsinki-based dance theatre company founded in 2011. A strong dialogue between art forms is central to the ensemble’s work. Movement, music, visual imagery and text intertwine into collage-like performances that open up new interpretations of timely themes relevant to both individuals and communities. The company’s works have been presented at venues and festivals including Espoo Theatre, Turku City Theatre, Kuopio Dance Festival and April Jazz, as well as at international festivals.
Ninni Perko is the artistic director of Sivuun Ensemble and an award-winning choreographer. Her multidisciplinary works have explored themes including domestic violence, intergenerational relationships and the environmental crisis. Perko has studied dance, directing, dramaturgy and physical theatre in Finland and the Netherlands. She is currently working with a three-year artist grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation for 2025–2028.
