Introduction

Choreographer Alpo Aaltokoski’s 40-year journey as an artist is celebrated in a shared performance evening in which three international female dancers interpret magnificent solo works.

Aaltokoski’s Tomorrow receives its renewed premiere, performed by Delfiina Huczkowski; Después de Ayer, Bolivian dancer Patricia “Pachi” Sejas’s interpretation of Aaltokoski’s solo After Yesterday, receives its Finnish premiere. In addition, Ukrainian-born Nina Bulgakova interprets Fertility, a work by her dance group Ethno Contemporary Ballet, for the first time as a solo version. The programme reflects dance artist Aaltokoski’s long-term cultural exchange and extensive performing activities also beyond Finland’s borders.

The minimalist and sensitively nuanced After Yesterday journeys into the self and the past, from the present moment towards the future, and reminds us that hope carries our lives. Tomorrow springs from the dancer’s body and makes visible the meanings of lived life, experiences, and the passage of time. The solos are independent Parts I and III of Alpo Aaltokoski’s choreographic Kancheli Trilogy. After Yesterday was originally created in 2008 for Anna Palmio, and Tomorrow for Sinikka Gripenberg in 2010.

Tomorrow requires complete surrender and captivating presence from its performer. When I wanted to bring the work back to the stage, I immediately thought of Delfiina. She is one of our most radiant stage artists,” Aaltokoski says.

“Bolivian Pachi Sejas is a powerful figure in dance in her home country and a widely respected cultural operator. Her strongly expressive stage presence impressed me, and I wanted to pass my work After Yesterday on to her. It premiered in Bolivia in 2013 under the name Después de Ayer. In the solo, the dancer’s restrained inner power is released slowly through small and delicate gestures. As a choreographer, I was interested in how a dancer bubbling with joy and energy, vibrant and exuberant, locks her strength inside and releases it into dialogue with Kancheli’s music.”

Fertility is a work by Ethno Contemporary Ballet, a dance group founded in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and operating in Helsinki since autumn 2022, about feminine creation amid the whirlwinds of humility, disobedience, and girlish passion. The old must die, because only then can new life be born! Fertility won Ars Electronica’s State of the ART(ist) Award in Austria in 2024. The award is granted to artists who courageously face threats of oppression, political persecution, unjust governance, environmental disasters, or exploitation.

Celebrating his 40th anniversary as an artist, Alpo Aaltokoski is a choreographer, dance artist, and the artistic director of Alpo Aaltokoski Company, founded in 1995. During his career, Aaltokoski has created more than 65 choreographies that have been performed in more than 30 countries on five continents. Alpo Aaltokoski Company is, among other things, the Finnish dance company that has operated most extensively in the countries of Latin America. Alpo Aaltokoski has also served as Professor of the Arts and as Artistic Director of the Full Moon Dance Festival (Täydenkuun Tanssit), and has been awarded, among others, the Pro Finlandia Medal and the Dance Achievement Award (Tanssin Maineteko) in Finland.

Organizer: Alpo Aaltokoski Company

Tomorrow is open, full of expectation and perhaps even fear, but the dancer ultimately has the strength and serenity to face it.
