As Tero Saarinen Company celebrates its 30th anniversary, the focus turns both to the future of dance and to dialogue between generations.
TSC IS CELEBRATING ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY. WHAT HAS CHANGED IN DANCE DURING THIS TIME - AND WHAT HASN'T?
Nothing is more permanent than change. Perhaps the biggest and most wonderful change is that we finally have Dance House Helsinki – one address where different forms of dance can meet audiences year-round.
WHAT DO YOU FIND INTERESTING ABOUT DANCE RIGHT NOW?
Each generation brings with it the ideas and perspectives it feels are needed, reflecting its own time – it is fascinating to follow this constant flow. At the same time, it has been wonderful to see how earlier works by long-established artists have begun to reappear and tour international stages. I find this intergenerational dialogue between works and perspectives both informative and inspiring.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU RIGHT NOW?
Neuroscience. It keeps bringing up fascinating facts about the impact of dance on our brain activity. Simply watching dance activates our motor systems, fuels our creativity and awakens emotional memories.
HAS YOUR THINKING ABOUT DANCE CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
My deepest belief in this art form, its necessity and its potential has only grown stronger.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN FINNISH DANCE NOW THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE WHEN YOU STARTED?
I love the thought of how having a dedicated house built specifically for dance-making could help shape the identity of the next generations of dance artists and act as a “booster” for their work.
WHAT DOES YOUR UPCOMING TRIPLE BILL HAVE TO OFFER?
The evening explores themes such as renewal and change, while each work highlights dancing, movement and performance through the perspectives of three choreographers from different generations.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY TO AUDIENCES COMING TO THE PERFORMANCE?
Dance has the ability to challenge and stimulate us on many levels without the need for additional words – so all you need to do is surrender to the dance!
