Introduction

Attitude Helsinki presents: SQUARE – an evening of four dance works.

Attitude Helsinki brings to the stage an evening of four dance pieces. This diverse programme features performances by both dance students and professional artists.

The first half includes the works Lampi and Seasons Within. Lampi is a narrative piece full of vibrant colours and whimsical characters exploring a pond. Seasons Within is a classical ballet set to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, expressing the transitions of the seasons through refined movement and musicality.

The second half has a more stripped-back atmosphere, featuring Jamais vu, performed by professional dancers, and Second Skin, danced by students aged 16 and over. Both pieces are rooted in contemporary dance and explore chosen themes through abstract storytelling and the embodiment of emotion.

This multifaceted evening offers four distinct works in a harmonious package. SQUARE brings together dance enthusiasts and professionals, with performers ranging in age from 6 to 40.

Lampi

Lampi is a story about belonging. This visually rich piece immerses the audience in a pond setting, where various creatures coexist in harmony. At the centre is a bird-like character on a quest to find its flock. The narrative also touches on an environmental crisis, as plastic waste invading the pond threatens the habitat.

Seasons Within

Seasons Within dives into the seasons through the disciplined yet delicate movement language of classical ballet. The piece explores the cycles of nature and life—its phases, growth, and emotions. Each season is given its moment, inspired by the moods of the music, natural phenomena, and the cycles of human life, all set to Antonio Vivaldi’s timeless composition The Four Seasons.

Second Skin

Second Skin is a contemporary dance piece delving into human vulnerability and defence mechanisms. It explores how people build second layers of skin—as protection, as submission, as assimilation. Alone, one can let go. Alone, one can reveal themselves. But in a group, one grows a skin that doesn’t feel, but suppresses.

Jamais vu

Jamais vu – the sensation of unfamiliarity in a previously known situation – can occur when a routine becomes so automated that one experiences it as if from an outsider’s perspective. The piece expresses this phenomenon through movement, sound, and visual effects. It explores the unsettling feeling of suddenly finding a familiar moment completely alien.
