A classic and a new creation delve into the numbing torrent of stimuli of our times
Opening season at Tanssin talo of house partner Tero Saarinen Company, one of Europe’s leading contemporary dance companies! TSC presents an exciting double bill: a new rendition of Tero Saarinen’s iconic The Rite of Spring solo HUNT (2002) combined with visiting choreographer Johanna Nuutinen’s Hz (2022), a commissioned creation for five TSC dancers.
Hz (Hertz) is TSC's first commissioned work from another choreographer. Johanna Nuutinen describes her creation as a deep dive into sound waves and underwater cacophony. The choreography for five dancers that polymorphously feeds the senses takes its audience to a place where what is heard is transformed into a total experience. In this piece sound pollution of the oceans serves as a metaphor for the current torrent of stimuli.
The second part of the evening is choreographer Tero Saarinen’s magnum opus HUNT, originally commissioned by the Venice Biennale in 2002. Saarinen performed the solo for 11 years, in a total of 83 cities and 32 countries. HUNT won praise from critics and audiences alike and is regarded as one of the most important contemporary interpretations of Igor Stravinsky's The Rite. Now, Saarinen is passing on his technically and expressionally highly demanding solo to two new dancers. Auri Ahola, who has also worked with the likes of Ohad Naharin and Jiří Kylián has collaborated with Tero Saarinen Company since 2012. Atte Kilpinen, who is currently dancing as a soloist with the Hamburg Ballet under John Neumeier, will debut with TSC in HUNT.
N.B.! These works use loud sound and strobe lights!
