Introduction
Rakkaudesta is a deeply personal, touching, and humorous one-man show by Jani Toivola about love and the longing for it. It speaks of the marks life leaves behind and of new beginnings. Of parenthood and of living in a man’s body. What does joy, sorrow, or parenthood feel like in a male body? What is a man’s body like when it is vulnerable or fragile? How does it express deep fulfillment or blissful happiness? What does reconciliation with one’s body mean to a man? And what is a man’s longing for closeness with another man like?
The performance is based on Toivola’s 2021 book Rakkaudesta. The evening takes the audience on a journey from a sweaty suburban school gym to New York’s gay clubs, and to a small Luo village in the Kenyan countryside, in search of lost roots. Rakkaudesta is a story about the longing to love oneself—and others.
“This is what I’ve learned about love: there are no rules.”
Rakkaudesta is part of the TOIVOLA Festival.
