Introduction
Vihan jälkeen is a performance about the possibility of compassion.
Vihan jälkeen presents powerful and timely images of how one drifts into hatred—and how one can let go of it. It tells of loneliness, rejection, the desire to belong—but also the potential for change. Of hope. Of the courage to choose differently. Of the light that guides one out of darkness when hatred becomes too confining.
Vihan jälkeen is also a story about family, family ties—and sisterhood. Jaana and Lili are sisters. Their experiences of the past and of their homeland, Finland, differ in many ways. Can they still find their way to one another?
In addition to the sisters, the performance features the stories of former hatemongers.
"Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t even see myself as particularly racist."
The performance sheds light on prejudice, radicalization, and the possibility of compassion. It is a captivating cavalcade of life's many shades. It grows from darkness into light, from coldness into warmth.
The play is based on interviews conducted by writer-director Elina Izarra and photographer Katja Tähjä. The interviewees include people who have spread or experienced hate, researchers, and those who support individuals in building new lives.
Very few plays in Finland center brown women or explore racism in depth. Moreover, brown actors rarely get to play roles written for white characters. Vihan jälkeen challenges these conventions and is, for that reason, both refreshing and compelling.
Vihan jälkeen is a guest performance at the 2025 TOIVOLA Festival.
