Baltic Take Over is a festival, a radical experiment, a crash course on Baltic arts, and the destination of a road trip from Lithuania to Helsinki. Curators from each country have invited artists from all three countries to take over the city of Helsinki. Dance House Helsinki will provide stage for two performances.

Does love exist only as we have already experienced it?

The performance "I SLAVE: a contemporary love story" is based on a love theme that most people smile at and call cliché. The creative team is highlighting situations that are relevant to our generation, which we often keep silent or are not used to discussing out loud.

Single women and women in the midst of relationships, or rather reflections of the same woman in different times and situations, create and comment on each other in space. By strategizing the presentation of themselves to the environment, they construct the other's gaze on themselves. Searching for the best angle for such a presentation, choreographers and founders of “BE COMPANY” – Agnietė Lisičkinaitė and Greta Grinevičiūtė – create an intimate but open space of encounter with the viewer. One of them is in thrall to the pursuit of a relationship and the abstract feeling of love, while the other is in thrall to the image of a perfect relationship shaped by the environment. And both of them ask: how to go from "I slave" to "I slay" today? How to reach the ideal shaped by the media? Can it be realistic at all?

The piece is part of The Baltic Take Over festival, during which two pieces will be presented at Dance House Helsinki. The Baltic Take Over festival co-curated by the New Theatre Institute of Latvia, Kanuti Gildi SAAL, and Lithuanian Dance Information Centre provides contexts in which to present Baltic work, under the lens of Baltic curators. The festival is in collaboration with URB Festival (www.urb.fi), Kiasma Theatre, Annantalo, Viirus Theatre, Mad House Helsinki and with the help from Eskus, Takamo, Tanssin Talo, TINFO and Circus Dance Finland. Baltic Take Over has been centrally funded by Baltic Culture Fund and The Nordic-Baltic NGO Program from the Office of Nordic Ministers Latvia, Estonian Ministry of Culture and Lithuanian Culture Council. All program of the festival can be found at www.baltictakeover.com.

More about Be company and the artists

BE COMPANY is an independent organisation of contemporary dance art. Two socially active and determined choreographers, Agniete and Greta, are willing to defend their beliefs, freedoms and the rights of social minorities. The artists seek to create a cohesive dialogue between the performing arts and social activities as well as to expand the boundaries of diversity and self-expression in Lithuania. For these reasons they regularly collaborate in different artistic and socio-cultural projects with the LGBT+ community, national minorities, different age groups, and more. Frequently the reality of their work approaches phantasmagoria which uses the synergy of various media.
