Introduction
Tsuumi Dance Theatre and friends bring favourite performances from past years to the stage, while creating new connections with the present. These evenings, designed for lovers of accessible dance, music, and theatre, invite the audience to enjoy, be charmed, and delight in the performances together.
In the shared evenings of Tsuumi Dance Theatre and friends, audiences can look forward to a lively atmosphere, surprising encounters, and the joy of friendship. Each evening features the return of Tsuumi Dance Theatre’s Kake – Tiellä tähtiin, alongside an uplifting guest performance. On Thursday evening, 20 November 2025, the Pannu Hall stage will celebrate not only the tenth anniversary of Kake but also the 60th birthday of esteemed dance artist Katri Soini. The programme features Kake – Tiellä tähtiin together with Etydejä erinomaisuudesta, a duet by Katri Soini and musician Mikko Perkola, directed by Reetta-Kaisa Iles.

This year, dance artist Katri Soini turns 60 – and you are invited to celebrate this milestone with dance! A consummate dancer with a distinguished career, Soini has worked with numerous choreographers since graduating from the Theatre Academy in 1987, performing extensively in Finland and abroad over 38 years. She is currently supported by a three-year grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. The evening will present Etydejä erinomaisuudesta, a highly praised duet by Soini and musician Mikko Perkola.
Etydejä erinomaisuudesta is a finely tuned dialogue between musician and dancer, between instrument and human voice. The performance explores the tension between expectation and reality. It disrupts knowledge-based understanding and draws forth the beauty of incompleteness. How little does it take for what is valued to become worthless, for control to slip, for refinement to turn brutal? The work illuminates that moment when civilisation reveals its coarseness, when a carefully guarded surface breaks, uncovering something more authentic beneath.
The style and character of the work transcend precise definitions of artistic form.
Tsuumi Dance Theatre: Kake – Tiellä tähtiin
Kake – Tiellä tähtiin premiered at the Savoy Theatre ten years ago, winning both audience and critical acclaim. Choreographed by Matti Paloniemi, the piece tells the story of a band called Kake, intoxicated by Finnish schlager music. The band dreams big, but inner tensions, differing ambitions, and unfulfilled hopes complicate their journey together. The original cast featured Reetta-Kaisa Iles, Tuomas Juntunen, Salla Korja, Jarno Tastula and Janne Teivainen. Now the work is revived for new audiences and a new era.
The performance is a compelling blend of dance, theatre and music. The musical framework features Finnish schlagers and tangos in fresh arrangements. Energetic, parodic, and yet genuinely moving, the work has all performers dancing, singing, and playing instruments.
