Etydejä erinomaisuudesta
Etydejä erinomaisuudesta is a finely tuned dialogue between a dancer and a musician, the human voice and an instrument. It moves between expectation and reality, revealing the beauty of imperfection and asking what happens when the carefully maintained surface breaks and something more human is revealed underneath.
The Dance House Helsinki performance on 20 November marks dancer Katri Soini’s 60th anniversary celebration. Soini is a distinguished artist with a long and impressive career. Since graduating from the Theatre Academy in 1987, she has collaborated with numerous choreographers over 38 years, performing extensively both in Finland and abroad. She is currently working with a three-year grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
Sharing the stage with Soini is musician Mikko Perkola, who has studied at the Päijät-Häme Conservatory, the Sibelius Academy and the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague under Arvo Haasma, Markku Luolajan-Mikkola and Wieland Kuijke. Perkola has performed and recorded internationally as a chamber musician and has also toured in social work units, reception centres and almost every prison in Finland.
The work is directed by Reetta-Kaisa Iles, a versatile artist active in the independent arts scene as a choreographer, performer, singer and pedagogue. In recent years, she has worked as a freelance choreographer and as a dancer-singer, including with Suistamon Sähkö and Tanssiteatteri Tsuumi. Iles is particularly interested in the intersections of dance, movement, music and voice. Her projects often feature close collaboration between musicians and dancers. She is drawn to a holistic form of performance that combines physical presence, individuality, sensitivity and the courage to be personally vulnerable.

Kake – Tiellä tähtiin
Kake – Tiellä tähtiin premiered at Savoy Theatre ten years ago. Matti Paloniemi’s choreography tells the story of a band called Kake, captivated by the world of Finnish popular music. The group’s dreams are big, but internal conflicts, differing ambitions and unfulfilled hopes create tension on their shared journey. The performers are Reetta-Kaisa Iles, Tuomas Juntunen, Salla Korja, Jarno Tastula and Janne Teivainen.
Kake – Tiellä tähtiin is an intriguing blend of dance, theatre and music. The performance features Finnish schlager and tango classics in reinterpreted versions. In this energetic, parodic yet genuinely touching piece, all performers dance, sing and play instruments.
